I've spent years in high school and college Spanish classes, and eventually lived in Spain for a couple of years. However, the subjunctive has always eluded me. After working with Marisa, I've finally gotten a handle on it. Through our convos and excersises in Spanish I'm finally able to recognize when it's necessary to use a verb tense that effectively doesn't exist in English. Thank you so much! Marisa gets you to speak Spanish very quickly, regardless of your previous background (if any) in the language, as she is brilliant at explaining the foundations of grammar and the finer points of learning a new language, while ensuring that the Spanish you learn is the one ​that's useful in everyday life. She's very punctual, organized, and what was very convenient for a person who travels regularly, gives classes via Facetime/Skype which are very effective when one can't be there for the regular, weekly class in-person. Would recommend her to anyone who wants to learn Spanish at every level!

After returning from a semester in Cuba, I was very motivated to maintain and even increase my Spanish proficiency. I found Marisa and she quickly evaluated my strengths as well as my areas that could use improvement. She structured our lessons around covering grammatical concepts that she noticed I did shy away from in my oral Spanish, which included use of the imperfect subjunctive, the conditional and the future tenses. Through written exercises and conversation, I began to feel more confident about these grammatical concepts. In addition, Marisa picked up on my intense interest in current events and was sure to include a relevant article in most lessons, from sources such as EL PAÍS or New York Times Español, which we read together and discussed. Marisa is very communicative about schedule changes and is very willing to hold the lesson via Skype or FaceTime, which we did several times and plan to do in the future, as I have moved back to DC after graduating from college.

I worked with Marisa for about 4 months. I could already read Spanish fairly quickly with the help of a dictionary, and I could theoretically do all the basic things like say hi and ask about someone's day, but I was just too embarrassed to try. So Marisa just gave me the space to try and speak, helping me to understand the mistakes I made, and prompting me with questions to help me keep talking. She was extremely great to work with. The only reason I'm not still working with her is that I moved to San Francisco, so if you're where she is... give her a ring! :)
